What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in New Jersey?

Comfortable Shoes

It might seem like an unusual suggestion, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven terrain since theyโ€™re “working farms.” While the ground is generally flat, it can be a bit uneven in spots. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes for comfort and safety. Please also avoid walking in restricted areas on the farm. For your own safety, and to protect the lavender plants and animals, itโ€™s best to refrain from running or jumping around.

Coolers

If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.

Cash

As Dave Ramsey would say, cash is king! Remember that you will need a way to buy your goods from your local lavender farms. Many local farm stores are self-service and cash is the simplest form of payment where the farmer doesn’t need to pay service fees for selling items. Some local farms use electronic payment methods such as Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Other farms may have access to a credit card machine.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

Yes, bees and other wildlife are typically present at lavender farms in New Jersey. Bees are attracted to the lavender, but they usually donโ€™t pose a problem and tend to leave visitors alone. Smaller wildlife, like butterflies, is also common. However, if you have allergies to certain plants, animals, or seasonal allergens, itโ€™s a good idea to come prepared. Be sure to follow the farmerโ€™s guidance on how to interact with wildlife during your visit.

Berlin

Lavender on the Bryn at Penbryn Farms is located in Berlin, New Jersey. This New Jersey lavender farm is located conveniently between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. THis lavender farm has 7 varieties of lavender and more to come, an ever-changing rotation of wildflowers throughout the warmer months, sunflower, zinnias, and snapdragons. From lavender products to lavender classes, this farm is certainly one to check out.

From their website: “We are a small family owned farm. The idea started during 2020 between myself, my mom, my uncle, and to an extent my son. At the time my toddler son and I would take small lavender bouquets to sell at my familyโ€™s produce stand, Stella Farms. We loved working with lavender so much that we bought a tray of 140 plants and a pack of wildflower seeds in 2021 and decided to start the project of fixing up Penbryn Farms and give it a cute nickname, Lavender on the Bryn.

As the plants grew and the place started to get fixed up we started offering yoga classes and eventually basket weaving classes. We started to rent out the space to photographers to shoot portraits and for small private parties. Stellaโ€™s Farm also planted a large field of sunflowers for us as a photo backdrop. We plan each year to add more and more flowers, especially lavender. We thank all who supported us in our early opening stages and look forward to offer more each season!”

Milford

Mad Lavender Farm is located in Milford, New Jersey. This lavender farm in New Jersey started as a dream in 2012 and has since morphed into a fun and enchanting stop for all guests. I am intrigued by the name “Mad Lavender” as it is a nod to Lewis Carroll, to always remember that we need a dose of fun and frabousity in our lives.

From their website: “Imagine sipping lavender lemonade under a flowering geodesic dome, cuddling baby Dwarf Nigerian goats, chickens that lay blue eggs, and taking a leisurely walk through a lavender labyrinth in full bloom. Our Tiny Shop is full of locally made artisanal lavender gifts and goodies. We invite you to come and enjoy!

In 2012, when the future of our familyโ€™s 10-acre farm came into question, we saw the opportunity to fulfill our dream of sustainable living and to share our vision with a greater community. Once a popular โ€œpick-your-own-raspberryโ€ farm, our familyโ€™s crop was demolished by the ever-increasing deer population. In our search for a deer-resistant crop, we discovered Lavender. The more we learned, the more enchanted we became with Lavender for its beauty, variety, healthful properties, and resilience. We decided to become lavender farmers.

In 2013, we planted our first crop of lavender on our sunny hilltop and it thrived beautifully. Beehives were brought in to pollinate our plants, and WWOOF helpers came to help us build our dreams. Years later, we have seven different varieties of lavender, a Lavender Labyrinth, and a lovely line of lavender products. All of our products are made by hand, here on the farm. Our honey and beeswax products come from Sweet Cheeks Apiaries. Everything is grown organically with absolutely no pesticides or chemical fertilizers.”

In the fall of 2020, we began planning two lavender fields in areas of the farm that were underutilized. Our plans and ideas continued to evolve, and by fall of 2021 we had planted 1,500 plants in three separate fields.

Field & Flock Lavender Farm opened to the public on June 24, 2022.  During our first season, we had the pleasure of welcoming visitors from southern New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and even California.

Our shop and production area are located in the barn. We have a covered patio that overlooks one of the fields so visitors can relax and enjoy the grounds.  If you visit during the harvest, you can watch us distill and learn about the process.”
