Navigating Insurance and Recovery After A House Fire
As a homeowner who’s been through the emotional and challenging journey of rebuilding my home after a devastating fire (June 10th, 2016), I want to offer a few words of encouragement and practical advice for others who may find themselves in a similar situation.
One of the most daunting parts of the recovery process is navigating the complexities of insurance. It can feel overwhelming to handle paperwork, communicate with adjusters, and understand the fine print while dealing with the grief of losing your home. But with patience, perseverance, and the right strategies, it is possible to turn this difficult chapter into a story of recovery and renewal. You have just experienced one of the greatest tragedies of your lifetime. We would love to pray for you as you navigate this.
We have written several books as a guide for homeowners navigating the challenges after a house fire. Here is a link to our newest book (written 2026) on Amazon. TOP 10 Reminders Following Your House Fire
At the end of the day, (Read, Re-Read, and Read it again!)
- Be patient.
- Do not trust everyone after the first encounter.
- Read your insurance policy cover to cover.
- TAKE PICTURES.
- GET EVERYTHING in WRITING and DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING without reading and understanding it.
- You can accept insurance monies without ACCEPTING or AGREEING to the original estimate.
- Your claim is not officially closed until all prescribed repairs are completed by your contractor and your home is restored to the pre-loss condition.
- The claim can always be reopened despite what anyone tells you.
- Although this will feel overwhelming and emotional, it must be viewed as a business transaction.
- You can and will make it through.
Above all else…REMEMBER that the goal of the restoration process in any loss is to RESTORE YOUR HOME to a PRE-LOSS CONDITION. This does not mean that you must accept anything and everything told to you by your adjuster or feel like you have to take “the easy way out”.
Our journey and the journey of the hundreds of those in our FREE facebook group are NOT perfect but they are UNIQUE. Your journey will not be perfect, but our goal is to help show you that it can be better.
