What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in Kentucky?

Comfortable Shoes

This may seem like an odd idea, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven ground as they are “working farms” where the ground is relatively flat but may be uneven. You should come prepared with closed-toe shoes. Please don’t walk in areas that are not allowed at the farm. It is always best not to run or jump around the lavender plants or animals for your safety and the farm’s well-being.

Coolers

If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.

Cash

As Dave Ramsey would say, cash is king! Remember that you will need a way to buy your goods from your local lavender farms. Many local farm stores are self-service and cash is the simplest form of payment where the farmer doesn’t need to pay service fees for selling items. Some local farms use electronic payment methods such as Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Other farms may have access to a credit card machine.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

When you visit a local lavender farm in Kentucky, please be aware that bees and other wildlife are likely present. Please follow the directions of the farmer for how you should address this, but we have found that bees and smaller wildlife like butterflies will typically leave you alone. Of course, if you have allergies to specific plants, animals, or seasonal allergens please come prepared.

When Are The Best Times to Visit Local Lavender Farms in Kentucky?

Although the local lavender farm in Kentucky may have specific times that they are open, we have found that some times in the season may be more optimal than others. For instance, to grab fresh lavender bundles, then you will want to shop during the Summer harvest (typically late June to August depending on the growing zone).

Please know that the price of some items may change depending on the season or may be adjusted based on the challenges of the growing conditions during a particular year.

From their website: “We first fell in love with lavender while visiting out west and wished for our own patch of magic.  After a lot of trial and error, our dream has come true!

“Lavender In Bloom” first opened for U-Pick in 2018.  We have 11 varieties of lavender at this time and about 2,000 plants in all.  The English varieties we have are “Royal Velvet”, “Folgate”, “Melissa”, “Buena Vista”, “White Dwarf”, “Royal Purple” and “Maillette”.  Our French varieties are “Gros Bleu”, “Phenomenal”, “Grosso” and “Hidcote Giant”.

We first distilled our lavender for hydrosols in 2020.  We loved producing this unique product in Central Kentucky.  Hydrosols were once considered the primary distillate of lavender and the essential oils were discarded as a byproduct.  Hydrosols have all the properties of the essential oil in a milder form.  The scent is slightly woodier and can be used as a body spray, facial toner, linen or room spray.  It’s a lovely natural way to freshen your home.”

Lexington, KY

Mom-Mom’s Lavender is located in Lexington, Kentucky. Oil Springs, KY

Lavender Springs Alpaca is located in Oil Springs, Kentucky. This alpaca farm also happens to grow some perennials like lavender with plans to increase their lavender fields. This farm raises alpacas for their warm wool and turns this into spun wool, wool sweaters, wool hats and more.

There are a few more things they are doing on their farm such as raising beeds and chickens.

From their website: “Alpacas have a smaller physical impact on their environment because they require less feed and water than other livestock of the same size; have soft padded feet and graze without pulling plants up from the roots which prevents erosion; and processing of their fiber uses less water and no โ€œsuper washingโ€ chemicals unlike their wool counterparts because they donโ€™t produce lanolin oil. Alpacas also produce fine quality, long lasting, and completely biodegradable fiber to make textiles. When you consider that the EPA has reported that Americans generate 16 million tons of textile waste a year (over a 6th of total municipal waste), natural fibers just make sense! They also have a positive impact by providing high quality manure that is rich in phosphorous, nitrogen, potassium, and micronutrients that give back to the soil. And their fiber is a favorite nesting material of birds.”

Our current store houses our lavender-based products, which includes pretty much anything you can imagine. We also host several dozen local artisans and their products. We have expanded to include a cafe with lavender based menu and healthy eating. We have added almost a thousand plants onsite of the store.
