Tips For Shopping at Your Local Lavender Farms in Rhode Island

We love when customers come prepared for their purchase even if it is their first time at our farm. We prefer to think about the 3C’s when visiting a local farm.

What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in Rhode Island?

Comfortable Shoes

It may seem like an unexpected tip, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven terrain since theyโ€™re “working farms.” While most areas are flat, there can be some uneven spots, so be sure to wear closed-toe shoes for comfort and safety. Please also avoid walking in restricted areas of the farm. For both your safety and to protect the lavender plants and animals, we recommend refraining from running or jumping around.

Coolers

If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.

Cash

As Dave Ramsey often says, cash is king! Keep in mind that you’ll need a way to pay for your purchases at local lavender farms. Many farm stores are self-service, and cash is the simplest payment option since it avoids service fees for the farmer. Some farms also accept electronic payments like Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, while others may offer credit card machines.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

Yes, bees and other wildlife are commonly found at lavender farms in Rhode Island. Bees are drawn to the lavender but typically don’t bother visitors and tend to go about their business. You may also spot smaller wildlife like butterflies. However, if you have allergies to specific plants, animals, or seasonal allergens, it’s a good idea to come prepared. Be sure to follow the farmerโ€™s instructions on how to interact with wildlife during your visit.

When Are The Best Times to Visit Local Lavender Farms in Rhode Island?

The best time to visit lavender farms in Rhode Island is during the summer harvest, typically from late June to August, depending on the growing zone. This is when fresh lavender bundles are available for purchase. Prices for some items may fluctuate based on the season and the growing conditions of that year, so it’s always a good idea to check with the farm for their specific hours and availability.

Wakefield, RI

Lavender Waves Farm is located in Wakefield, Rhode Island. This Rhode Island lavender farm invites you to explore the world of lavender through luxurious lavender picnics, lavender farm tours, lavender yoga, lavender field photography and more.

From their website: “After purchasing the farm in late 2016, the owner began restoring the barn, installing electricity, repairing the water system, and adding three stables, Dutch doors, and a poultry area. Livestock grazing pastures were also created for sheep, llama, alpaca, and donkeys.

In 2017, corn was planted in preparation for a lavender field. A gazebo was added in 2018, along with designs for the lavender rows. A garage with a living area was built to house farm equipment. The lavender fieldโ€™s inner circle was planted that year, followed by the outer circle in 2019, totaling over 4,000 plants of 10 varieties. The garage’s upper area became a luxurious Farm Suite.

By 2020, the farm gained popularity, with a large following around the lavender field. To manage demand, the first lavender harvest was sold through tightly regulated cuttings on five Saturdays during peak bloom. Staff, volunteers, and the Kingston Hill Garden Club helped manage the harvest.

The farm’s unique design creates a peaceful, beautiful, and luxurious space for visitors. In its short time, it has been featured in media and social outlets. The farm fulfills the ownerโ€™s dream of growing lavender and sharing it with the community, offering a special place for gatherings amid the lavender. The granddaughter of the original owner expressed how proud her grandparents would be to see the farm used for farming again. We are grateful for the support of lavender enthusiasts who encourage us to continue this labor of love.”
