Tips For Shopping at Your Local Lavender Farms in Maine
We love when customers come prepared for their purchase even if it is their first time at our farm. We prefer to think about the 3C’s when visiting a local farm.
What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in Maine?
Comfortable Shoes
This may seem like an odd idea, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven ground as they are “working farms” where the ground is relatively flat but may be uneven. You should come prepared with closed-toe shoes. Please don’t walk in areas that are not allowed at the farm. It is always best not to run or jump around the lavender plants or animals for your safety and the farm’s well-being.

Coolers
If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.
Cash
As Dave Ramsey would say, cash is king! Remember that you will need a way to buy your goods from your local lavender farms. Many local farm stores are self-service and cash is the simplest form of payment where the farmer doesn’t need to pay service fees for selling items. Some local farms use electronic payment methods such as Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Other farms may have access to a credit card machine.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?
When you visit a local lavender farm in Maine, please be aware that bees and other wildlife are likely present. Please follow the directions of the farmer for how you should address this, but we have found that bees and smaller wildlife like butterflies will typically leave you alone. Of course, if you have allergies to specific plants, animals, or seasonal allergens please come prepared.

When Are The Best Times to Visit Local Lavender Farms in Maine?
Although the local lavender farm in Maine may have specific times that they are open, we have found that some times in the season may be more optimal than others. For instance, to grab fresh lavender bundles, then you will want to shop during the Summer harvest (typically late June to August depending on the growing zone).
Please know that the price of some items may change depending on the season or may be adjusted based on the challenges of the growing conditions during a particular year.

Moonglow Lavender is located in Wayne, Maine. Although this lavender farm is not open to the public, they invite you to check out their amazing lavender products, safe for your home, on their website. This lavender farm is family-focused and they have discovered many incredible ways to use lavender for your home.
From their website: “Hi! I’m Jill, the one who started this journey into a lavender life. I am a mom, wife, occupational therapist, and small business owner. Jim (Farmer Jim), my husband, makes the field possible to grow our beautiful lavender. He also has the ability to fix almost anything that has gone wrong…usually due to me and my messes. Marin is our daughter who provides laughter and assistance with all aspects of the business. She keeps me grounded. Then there is Quinn. Quinn, our German Shorthair Pointer. He helps in no possible way but, my goodness he is cute. We are your typical family. Busy with school and sports activities, work, home life, and other adulting responsibilities.
For me, the dark days of winter usually bring about thinking of how to keep busy or a new project. Moonglow Lavender started with my need to grow and nurture a useful crop to share with the community and beyond. We chose to grow lavender. Lavender has many benefits and has been used for centuries. It has been used for its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties for healing wounds. The lavender scent brings calmness, and studies have shown it to improve attention and memory.
Our field is located in Wayne, Maine. The field is on a south-facing slope with enormous pasture pines at the top that look like guardians watching over the field. Being in the field brings peace to me every time. The sound of birds and bees and the scent of the flowers is powerful. The microclimate of the field and sand is perfect for growing lavender. We started with a small test plot in 2019. We learned what we should do and not do, and it turns out our learning continues every year. In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, we started Moonglow Lavender. We introduced a few products in that year, and as we continue to add more lavender to the field, we will be adding new products such as culinary buds. Yup, lavender is a lovely herb that can be added to sweet or savory dishes.โ”
