What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in California?

Comfortable Shoes

This may seem like an odd idea, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven ground as they are “working farms” where the ground is relatively flat but may be uneven. You should come prepared with closed-toe shoes. Please don’t walk in areas that are not allowed at the farm. It is always best not to run or jump around the lavender plants or animals for your safety and the farm’s well-being.

Coolers

If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.

Cash

As Dave Ramsey would say, cash is king! Remember that you will need a way to buy your goods from your local lavender farms. Many local farm stores are self-service and cash is the simplest form of payment where the farmer doesn’t need to pay service fees for selling items. Some local farms use electronic payment methods such as Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Other farms may have access to a credit card machine.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

When you visit a local lavender farm in California, please be aware that bees and other wildlife are likely present. Please follow the directions of the farmer for how you should address this, but we have found that bees and smaller wildlife like butterflies will typically leave you alone. Of course, if you have allergies to specific plants, animals, or seasonal allergens please come prepared.

When Are The Best Times to Visit the Local Lavender Farm in California?

Although the local lavender farm in California may have specific times that they are open, we have found that some times in the season may be more optimal than others. Fresno

Lavender Fresh Farm is nestled in Fresno CA. Founder and owner Richard Gillispie was inspired to create a lavender farm to feed his honeybees. In his research to grow the best lavender, he learned that growing lavender could be fun and that lavender could be used for more than feeding honeybees. He enrolled in college level lavender courses and read research papers on lavender… and as his knowledge of lavender grew, so did his ideas on what a lavender farm could be.

As Richard’s plantings of lavender expanded, so did the excitement spread throughout the family. Richardโ€™s three children (Heather, Nathan, and Ryan) began working in the fields and also experimenting with making lavender products. From their website: “Our farm offers a small market with homemade lavender products such as essential oils, soaps, lotions, and dried bouquets.  Currently we have over 80 varieties of lavender, including culinary lavender. Check us out on facebook, too! We have 60 hives on our property and a friend of ours processes the honey from the hives for us.  This isn’t infused honey, but honey from the pollen in the lavender.”

Friant

Together, Heidi and Randy raised five kids in the wild backwoods of Idaho, braving the 2 hour drive to work, wild bears, cougars and wolves, and the harsh Northern Idaho/British Columbia winters. From this beautiful and raw life, a family of dreamers, doers and artisans arose.Lavender Springs is home to several different varieties of lavender and is constantly looking to add more varieties as the farm grows. Everything that is grown is pesticide free and grown naturally. Even the water comes from natural springs that bubble out of the ground and turns this valley into a thriving farm.

The ranch was purchased in 2016, and the dream of Lavender Springs Farm was born. Heidi began by learning everything she could about how to grow, cultivate and harvest lavender. The lavender would not exist without her expertise and passion, and though everyone at Lavender Springs knows a little about lavender, Heidi is the trained expert. With this knowledge at hand, they began to plant a small field of lavender and to produce all natural, pesticide free, spring fed lavender products right on the ranch.โ€‹
