Tips For Shopping at Your Local Lavender Farms in Virginia

We love when customers come prepared for their purchase even if it is their first time at our farm. We prefer to think about the 3C’s when visiting a local farm.

Before you go further, check out our COMPLETE step-by-step Farm Stand Toolkit to launch and scale your farm stand for more income.

What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in Virginia?

We love when customers come prepared for their purchase even if it is their first time at our farm. We prefer to think about the 3C’s when visiting a local farm.

Comfortable Shoes
Many lavender farms have uneven ground because theyโ€™re working farms. Even though most areas are flat, youโ€™ll want to wear closed-toe shoes for safety and comfort. Please donโ€™t run or jump around, as this can harm the plants and animals. Stick to the areas open to visitors.

Coolers
If youโ€™re buying frozen or refrigerated items, make sure to bring a cooler so they stay fresh on the way home.

Cash
Cash is often the easiest way to pay at local farms. Many farm stores are self-service, and cash helps avoid extra fees. Some farms also accept other payment options like Venmo, Apple Pay, or credit cards.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

Yes, bees and other wildlife are often found at lavender farms. Bees love lavender, but they usually wonโ€™t bother you. You might also see butterflies and other small animals. If you have allergies to plants, animals, or pollen, itโ€™s a good idea to prepare before your visit. Always follow the farmโ€™s rules when interacting with wildlife.

When Are The Best Times to Visit Local Lavender Farms in Virginia?

The best time to visit lavender farms in Virginia is during the summer harvest, usually from late June to August. This is when fresh lavender is available for purchase. Keep in mind that prices may change depending on the season and weather, so itโ€™s always a good idea to check with the farm before you go.

You will find fresh and dried lavender available and more items in their online store like lavender bath bombs, lavender essential oil, lavender hydrosol spray, lavender soy candles, and more.

From their website: “Windsor Lavender Farm located in Amelia, Virginia. We began this endeavor in 2020 after wanting to find ways to work our land and promote a self-sufficient way of life. In addition to growing lavender, we have ducks and chickens that produce fresh eggs, a few dwarf goats, and craft our own unique soap, candles, and distil lavender essential oil you can purchase on site at our barn store.

We currently have over 2000 lavender plants in 5 different varieties (Grosso, Hidcote, Munstead, White Spike, and Melissa), and are beginning work on a specimen garden which will eventually include over a dozen other varieties. All of our products are handmade by us, and available in our Barn Store located at the farm, as well as online. We also host a variety of events on our farm throughout the year, including our premier event in June, the Amelia Lavender Festival, which draws visitors from all across Virginia (and beyond!).

Windsor Lavender Farm is not actually named after a location but lovingly named after our late dog โ€œWindsorโ€, a pitbull mix rescue that had been with us since 2009 when he was rescued as a 1 year old. Windsor, our โ€œold manโ€ had been an amazing companion and came with us to Amelia in 2017 before the start of our farm. We have been compelled and honored to immortalize our lavender farm with his name. 2008-2022

Annandale, VA

Heartland Lavender Farm is located in Annandale, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm offers fresh and dried bundles, lavender sachets, lavender wands, and more.

From their website: “We are the 4th generation to care for our small Midwestern family farm. Over the years, we have raised livestock, corn, soybeans, and hay. Dismayed with the increasing amount of fertilizers and chemicals being used in traditional row-crop farming, we started looking for an alternative crop which would be all natural and chemical free. In 2015, a relative suggested we try growing lavender. We began researching lavender and quickly became intrigued. We learned about plants, climates, and soil types, and soon we were hooked on Lavender! We planted a small test-bed the next spring.

Like most new lavender farmers, we were soon seeking advice from the expert growers in Sequim, WA. We purchased our first plants from Sequim, a mix of angustifolias and x-intermedia’s. Not sure if the plants would grow on our farmland’s heavy clay soils, we installed our test beds. Our research indicated that using raised planting beds amended with limestone gravel and compost would produce the best results. We were delighted to find that the lavender would indeed grow on our farm, and soon we were harvesting flowers. And as an added bonus, the deer had no interest in eating the plants.

Armed with our research and experience, we decided to go into full production and become a wholesale supplier of dried lavender flowers. Our test beds taught us that Lavandin (lavandula x-intermedia) varieties had the best chance of thriving on our farm. We prepared the field and began planting our new “Grosso” and “Phenomenal” plants. Enduring an exceptional amount of physical labor, we installed and planted 2 1/2 miles of amended and raised beds. The reward for all the hard work is the beautiful, fragrant, all-natural lavender crop each summer. There is deep satisfaction in providing a product that is both good for our farm and great for our customers. We love it!

Blacksburg, VA

Beliveau Farm Winery is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. This lavender farm offers a gorgeous wedding venue, cute bed & breakfast.

From their website: “Yvan, a builder, academic, and farm boy, dreamed of making wine. In 2001, he bought a 165-acre farm to plant a vineyard and open a winery. Originally called Maison Beliveau, the name changed to Beliveau Farm in 2019 to reflect its agricultural focus.

Joyce, passionate about lavender, planted the first two rows in 2005, and by 2007, the renovated farmhouse opened as a bed and breakfast. It quickly became a popular wedding venue. Over the years, the farmโ€™s lavender fields have drawn thousands of visitors each year during lavender season. Grapes were first planted in 2009, and by 2011, wine was being made. The winery opened in 2012, earning six competition medals in its first year. In 2019, a gluten-free brewery and Wine and Beer Garden were added, allowing Yvan, who is gluten-sensitive, to enjoy both beer and wine.

Yvan holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and retired from Virginia Tech in 2021. Now, he spends his time on the farm, making wine, leading tours, or relaxing with guests. Joyce, with a Master’s in Counseling, manages Beliveauโ€™s operations and creative direction. In 2019, Beliveau Farm installed a solar field, earning the 2019 โ€œGreen Business of the Year Award.โ€ Growth continues with the new โ€œSugar Shack,โ€ offering wine tastings, maple syrup education, and stunning views of the vineyard. Joyce and Yvan have raised a large family and cherish time spent together at the winery.”

Baby Bear Farm is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm offers a variety of lavender products including lavender soap, lavender lotion, lavender body butter, and more.

From the website: “Baby Bear Farm is nestled near the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Our farm was started from a desire to make a positive impact on peopleโ€™s lives and well-being.

In 2018, we faced some difficult personal challenges.  But on one sunny day, we saw a fluffy baby black bear running on the mountain hillside. Baby bear sat her butt down and enjoyed some tasty corn (probably stolen from a farmer who was attending church service that Sunday morning). The bright sun warmed her little face. She was so happy, living in the moment.  And so Baby Bear Farm was born.

May Baby Bear Farm be a place of serenity and healing for you. May our products ease your pain, bring peace to your mind, body and soul.”

Catlett, VA

Seven Oaks Lavender Farm is located in Catlett, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm appears to be in a state of transition with new owners. In the meantime, you can find an abundance of lavender products on their website. This includes lavender linen spray, lavender lotion, lavender tea, lavender jelly, and more.

From their website: “Hello! We are Jason and Katie Rinker! We are thrilled to be the new owners of Seven Oaks Lavender Farm.  Continuing the legacy Deb and Edie started is an honor for us.  We have seven children, four of whom still live at home; Hope 16, Matthew 14, Luke 12 and Lily 8. They canโ€™t wait to become lavender farmers and bunny caretakers.  Weโ€™ve always called Northern Virginia home (we were both born at Arlington hospital, five years apart). Growing up in Oakton and Vienna, we truly love this beautiful state. We have lived in Manassas for the past 20 years and the local community is really important to us.

We feel like we are living in a Hallmark movie โ€“ owning a lavender farm was never on our radar at least not on Jasonโ€™s.  We came to see it on a whim, sure that it was something we would not actually do.  When we pulled up, Deb immediately noted that our last name was Rinker and that her brother had married a Rinker. It turns out that we are related!  Debโ€™s nephews are Jasonโ€™s second cousins.  We decided right away that this was providential.  Once we toured the farm and saw how beautiful it was, the wheels started turning and we couldnโ€™t stop thinking about it.”

Chatham, VA

Soul Soleil Farm is located in Chatham, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm offers a variety of custom creations like lavender dark chocolate, lavender infused honey, lavender tea, lavender goats milk soap, lavender bath salts, and more.

From their website: “We spent a couple of years bringing the farmhouse back to life and wondering what to grow on our new farm. I knew I needed some help and the best person I knew to help was Davidโ€™s father and lifelong farmer, Papa Charlie. He suggested to try something new and different from the crops traditionally grown in Southside Virginia. โ€œGrow lavender! Deer and rabbits donโ€™t eat it and I think it smells pretty good, too!โ€

David and I visited some lavender farms throughout the region and talked to the growers. The next thing we knew we had joined the United States Lavender Growers Association and were on a flight to their 2018 annual conference in Arizona. When the conference was over, we knew this was for us. We wanted to be lavender farmers. Starting off small and growing into our newfound farm, we planted just six plants in 2018. The following season we planted 300 lavender plants, and in 2020 we added 1,200 more and Soul Soleil Farm was born.โ€

Covington, VA

Blue Spring Run Farm is located in Covington, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm offers lavender and honey from their beehives on the farm.

From their website: “Our farm began when my husband and I moved back to Virginia where I continued to be a stay-at-home mom of our six daughters. Having a large family for us meant that we did what we needed to in order to make ends meet, and that meant farming. Our farm actually started as a vegetable farm, but as the girls grew and began to take interest in the farm, I let them work with their father with the vegetables while I transitioned to learning more about lavender. Now the girls are grown and on their own, we no longer need to grow all the vegetables, although we still have some. Now my husband maintains the vegetables and fruit that we grow and has returned to working with honey bees, and we both have turned to growing and developing our lavender patch hoping that one day it will become the lavender field that we envision.”

Mystic River Lavender is located in Riner, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm offers a variety of products for your home including lavender blueberry jam, lavender body scrub, lavender hyaluronic acid, lavender massage candle, and more.

From their website: “Upon retiring from the corporate world, Janice and Keith Mileski fell in love with the area around Blacksburg VA and purchased a small farm in the area. Soon we succumbed to the lure of Lavender and created several Lavender fields on the farm. The farm was started in 2008 with the concentration on Herbs such as Rosemary, Mints, Sages and of course, Lavender. Within the second year we started concentrating on Lavender only.

As the plantings grew, Janice applied her interest in the many wonderful benefits of Lavender and along with Keithโ€™s background and knowledge of chemistry, started to craft a line of Lavender based body care products, lotions, sprays, creams, handcrafted soaps, dog care products, along with a variety of other beneficial products.

The farm now includes over 18 varieties of both Angustifolia and Intermedia Lavenders to enjoy including several Culinary varieties. With amazing vistas, the farm includes a serene setting to walk through the Lavender fields and enjoy the wonderful and relaxing fragrance of Lavender.”

This Virginia lavender farm welcomes you with open arms during the bloom season and invites you to discover their many lavender products in their online farm store. Some of their products include lavender soap, lavender lotion, lavender lip balm, lavender body butter, and more.

From their website: “Red Fern Farm, located in Lunenburg County, Virginia, has been home for over 25 years. Weโ€™ve raised our children here and now make memories with our grandchildren. The farm spans 126 acres, where Iโ€™ve always loved gardening, and David enjoys the landโ€™s vastness. Though the idea of planting lavender wasnโ€™t immediately embraced, itโ€™s now a labor of love. We currently have 2,000 lavender plants, with plans to add 300 more this year.

My passion lies in growing lavenderโ€”propagating, planting, and watching it thrive. I also enjoy creating culinary, body care, and home products from it. In the summer of 2023, we opened the farm to visitors during lavender blooming season and plan to continue this tradition annually.”

Williamsburg, VA

Sweethaven Lavender is located in Williamsburg, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm aims to be a destination for the entire family throughout the summer bloom. Stop by for evening music, visit their on-farm store to grab your favorite lavender products, or enjoy lavender all year long through their subscription service.

They offer an abundance of lavender products including lavender lip balm, lavender lotion, lavender soap, lavender bubble bath, lavender simple syrup, and so much more.

From their website: “Sweethaven was a dream planted in our familyโ€™s heart long before we were able to purchase the farm. Our goal is to unite as a family, steward our resources, and share the beauty of God’s creation with others. We are grateful for the support of friends, family, and neighbors as this dream comes to life.

We chose lavender for its beauty, soothing scent, and healing properties. It aligns perfectly with our familyโ€™s homeschooling schedule, and being perennial, it offers sustainable growth, though the work is never-endingโ€”and we love it!

Our skincare line, formulated by our daughter after completing an organic skincare course, uses only the best ingredients, adhering to high safety standards with natural oils and plant preservatives. We believe in putting only what youโ€™d eat on your skin.

The name Sweethaven reflects our farm as a refuge from the fast pace of modern lifeโ€”a place to relax, recharge, and make lasting memories. Come, unwind, and enjoy the peaceful lavender fields.”

Wytheville, VA

Beagle Ridge Herb Farm is located in Wytheville, Virginia. This Virginia lavender farm is likely one of the most well-known (to lavender farmers, that is) lavender farms across the United States. Ellen has been an inspiration to so many new and experienced lavender growers alike offering lavender classes, retail and wholesale lavender products, lavender tea parties, and the “Come Celebrate Lavender” annual conference.

From their website: “In 2001, a dream became reality when Beagle Ridge opened to the public after attending an Agritourism workshop and planting various gardens. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, our 210-acre farm, once part of a 2,000-acre hunting preserve, has welcomed visitors from all 50 states and 42 countries. The land’s natural beauty nourishes us daily, and we are eager to share it.

Our farm, home to deer, turkeys, grouse, rabbits, and even black bears, faces gardening challenges, but weโ€™ve learned to work with the land. The Tea Garden, refreshed every few years due to vigorous mint growth, is contained in terra cotta tiles, and all plants are tea-friendly. Other gardens include a formal herbal display, Lavender walk, Thyme and Oregano collections, pergola, water garden, wildlife habitat, and more. The Xeric plants in these beds thrive with minimal water.

The woodland garden provides shade and hosts plants like Columbine, Hepatica, and Ginger. Berry-producing shrubs support wildlife, while a dry-bed helps manage stormwater. Our garden is a Certified Habitat, Monarch Watch Site, Bee Friendly, and a Pesticide-Free Zone, attracting birds, butterflies, frogs, and lizards.

A slate wall surrounding the formal garden, a gift from my husband, protects herbs from winter winds and creates a microclimate. The hardscaping absorbs sunlight, allowing us to grow plants that wouldnโ€™t typically survive here. In winter, the gardenโ€™s structure shines, offering a chance to plan for the next season.”
