How do You Pronounce “Sequim”?

Many thanks to Ginger with Olympic Bluffs Cider for sharing this with us! Sequim is pronounced “Skwim”. Also, this area is in a rain shadow which means we only get about 16โ€ of rain a year making it have more of a Provencal climate.” We have always said that it is best to learn anything from a local first and we are glad that Ginger shared this with us.

What is Special About Lavender in Sequim?

Many thanks to Scott with Victor’s Lavender for giving us some special insight to this world-famous growing environment. “Sequim is where the lavender industry first developed, which is why we call it the โ€œLavender Capital of North America.โ€ Sequim has the perfect Mediterranean climate and lines up with France, which is why Washington State is also a leading producer of wine. While everyone knows how rainy Washington State is, Sequim is in a โ€œrain shadowโ€ of the Olympic Mountains, what we call the “blue holeโ€ where we receive dramatically less rainfall.

This helps create the perfect environment for growing amazing lavender. Thatโ€™s why we have so many lavender farms all within a 20-minute drive!”

Tips For Shopping at Your Local Lavender Farms in Sequim

We love when customers come prepared for their purchase even if it is their first time at our farm. We prefer to think about the 3C’s when visiting a local farm.

What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in Sequim?

Comfortable Shoes

This may seem like an odd idea, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven ground as they are “working farms” where the ground is relatively flat but may be uneven. You should come prepared with closed-toe shoes. Please don’t walk in areas that are not allowed at the farm. It is always best not to run or jump around the lavender plants or animals for your safety and the farm’s well-being.

Coolers

If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.

Cash

As Dave Ramsey would say, cash is king! Remember that you will need a way to buy your goods from your local lavender farms. Many local farm stores are self-service and cash is the simplest form of payment where the farmer doesn’t need to pay service fees for selling items. Some local farms use electronic payment methods such as Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Other farms may have access to a credit card machine.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

When you visit a local lavender farm in Washington, please be aware that bees and other wildlife are likely present. Please follow the directions of the farmer for how you should address this, but we have found that bees and smaller wildlife like butterflies will typically leave you alone. Of course, if you have allergies to specific plants, animals, or seasonal allergens please come prepared.

When Are The Best Times to Visit Local Lavender Farms in Sequim?

The local lavender farms in Washington may have set hours of operation, but weโ€™ve discovered that certain times of the season are better than others. For example, if you’re looking to pick up fresh lavender bundles, the best time to visit is during the Summer harvest, typically from late June to August, depending on the growing zone.

Please know that the price of some items may change depending on the season or may be adjusted based on the challenges of the growing conditions during a particular year.

From their website: “Over 35 years ago, my parents bought 40 acres in Sequim, Washington, dreaming of retiring there. After selling parcels to put their five kids through school, they ended up with just 5 acres. Over the years, they worked hard to develop the property, eventually building a cabin and pond. In 1994, they retired, moved to Sequim, and built their dream house across the pond.

In 1995, my mom, an avid gardener, started planting lavender to create a sea of blooms outside her windows. By 1996, they joined the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and sold lavender goods at the Lavender Festival. The farm now has over 1,500 lavender plants, and we run a gift shop called the Garden Shed, offering lavender products, gardening items, and โ€œgarden whimsy.โ€

About eight years ago, I began creating products for the shop, like our popular Lemon Lavender Bug Repellent, which now flies off the shelves. When my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, we decided to keep the farm in the family, so my husband Jeff and I moved here with our daughters. We’re proud to be a second-generation lavender farm, continuing my parents’ legacy and dreaming of future expansion.”

Being on the Olympic peninsula, Sequim has a unique Mediterranean type of climate perfect for growing an abundance of fruits, vegetables and LAVENDER! It grows abundantly everywhere in this region. So much so that they even use it in their landscapes like we would use shrubs. We visited a few farms and there are well over 20 just in this town! They grow numerous varieties that are a rainbow of lavender shades! The quaint stores carry everything from cleaning products to body care products such as lotions, creams, sprays, lip care, soaps and more. They also had full lines of lavender culinary products such as teas and other drinks, lavender infused sugar, honey, baked goods and so much more! They also had things such as candles, sachets, rice bags and face masks. You could take free tours of the majority of the farms! Such a beautiful region of our country well worth the trip! Landscapes vary from snow capped mountains, to moss covered rainforests, to beautiful rocky coastal views. Wonderful local bakeries, restaurants and coffee shops abound! Even tucked in some whale watching! Get out of your bubble and go explore this beautiful region sometime!!
