Tips For Shopping at Your Local Lavender Farms in Utah

We love when customers come prepared for their purchase even if it is their first time at our farm. We prefer to think about the 3C’s when visiting a local farm.

What Should I Bring to a Local Lavender Farm in Utah?

Comfortable Shoes

It may seem like an unexpected tip, but many of our local lavender farms have uneven terrain since they’re “working farms.” While most areas are flat, there can be some uneven spots, so be sure to wear closed-toe shoes for comfort and safety. Please also avoid walking in restricted areas of the farm. For both your safety and to protect the lavender plants and animals, we recommend refraining from running or jumping around.

Coolers

If you are buying refrigerated or frozen items, please come prepared with a cooler. There is nothing worse than buying cold items at a local farm and not having a way to keep it cool during your drive home.

Cash

As Dave Ramsey often says, cash is king! Keep in mind that you’ll need a way to pay for your purchases at local lavender farms. Many farm stores are self-service, and cash is the simplest payment option since it avoids service fees for the farmer. Some farms also accept electronic payments like Venmo, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, while others may offer credit card machines.

Are Bees and Other Wildlife Present?

Yes, bees and other wildlife are commonly found at lavender farms in Utah. Bees are drawn to the lavender but typically don’t bother visitors and tend to go about their business. You may also spot smaller wildlife like butterflies. However, if you have allergies to specific plants, animals, or seasonal allergens, it’s a good idea to come prepared. Be sure to follow the farmer’s instructions on how to interact with wildlife during your visit.

When Are The Best Times to Visit Local Lavender Farms in Utah?

The best time to visit lavender farms in Utah is during the summer harvest, typically from late June to August, depending on the growing zone. This is when fresh lavender bundles are available for purchase. Prices for some items may fluctuate based on the season and the growing conditions of that year, so it’s always a good idea to check with the farm for their specific hours and availability.

From their website: “Baker Creek Lavender Farm, run by Scott and Mary, is a family-operated farm located 25 miles northwest of St. George, UT, on the Hobby Horse Acres Ranch. The ranch, established by Scott’s grandfather in the 1950s, continues the farming legacy with lavender cultivation.

Inspired by their love for lavender, essential oils, and related products, Scott and Mary began researching and growing lavender in 2015. In 2018, they planted their first 680 lavenders, and since then, the farm has expanded with more fields and a variety of lavender cultivars. They now also grow organic herbs such as white sage, oregano, and mint.

Starting with barren land, Scott built the farm from the ground up, installing irrigation and drip systems, and turning the field into the thriving lavender farm it is today. The farm continues to grow, and Scott and Mary are grateful for the support they’ve received from family and friends.”

We moved to Eden, Utah, and named our farm “Lavender Hill” after the steep hillside near the Nordic Valley ski slope. For over 20 years, we’ve grown and produced lavender products, starting at small farmers’ markets and expanding to Park City and Swiss Days in Midway.

In 2018, I took over the business and relocated the lavender to my home just north of my parents’ property. After building new rows and water lines in 2019, I launched a new website, products, and “The Lavender Loft” storefront in 2020. Though Covid and grasshoppers slowed progress, I’m excited for what summer will bring.”

The legacy of the Droubay family lives on through Scott Droubay, a prominent Utah farmer known for his alfalfa and other crops.
